Adventures in Creepiness : Recruiting Update Two

http://www.pointsincase.com/files/u320/nevernude.jpg

Your average recruiting enthusiast takes a trip to the doctor; awkwardness ensues

Lots of news on the recruiting front for the month of July. Your quick, bulleted rundown:

"Plus if you’re a lineman, Iowa is definitely one of the best places you can go"

Elsewhere, Darious Cummings committed to where talent goes to die and defensive back Jonathan Mincy opted to head for Auburn, something I neglected to mention in the last update. So what's next in the Ohio State recruiting wars? A position-by-position breakdown of offers and needs after the jump.

Star-divide

Quarterback: With the commitment of Taylor Graham, quarterback is done. The only other reported offers - Andrew Hendrix and Nick Montana - have committed elsewhere, and neither Scout nor Rivals are reporting any new offers being extended.

Running back: Roderick Smith is committed, but the staff hasn't given up on any of the other guys: Spencer Ware, Corey Brown (not that Corey Brown), and Storm Johnson are all being actively pursued. I wouldn't count on any of them committing.

Fullback: Ohio State has reportedly offered Zach Zwinak, a high school running-back who projects as a fullback at the next level. His offer list is impressive: Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame (he's being recruited by Powlus? Really?), Cal and Wisconsin are all after him, as is West Virginia, where beautiful women flock like the salmon of Capistrano and the runaway beer trucks run away like... Chris Henry and Pac-Man Jones fleeing the scene?

Wide Receiver: The targets to remember here are Christian Green and James Lewis. Another name to watch is Tyrone Williams. a Cleveland kid whose biggest offer of note aside from Ohio State is Illinois. If he's really 6'5" and he really runs a 4.5 and that's his offer list, I'll.... I'll do something simultaneously ridiculous and hilarious. Dude apparently averaged 33 yards per catch as a junior, playing in only five games and grabbing only eleven balls (hurr hurr).

Tight End: Ohio State has no offers to speak of out after the commitment of aforementioned commitment of CJ Fiedorowicz, apparently content with the Stoneburner-DiLillo tandem as the two-tights set of the future.

Offensive Tackle: The 300-pound buffet buster in the room is Seantrel Henderson, who has absolutely everyone going gaga. He's the number one prospect in the history of everything, apparently, with offers from USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Michigan; a veritable who's who of the college football world. I have no inside information on who he's leaning toward, so allow this image to suffice vis-a-vis my opinion of Seantrel Henderson:

House-do-want_medium

Henderson is not necessarily a vital get however, as Ohio State still has offers out to the talented trio of Matt James, Chaz Green, and Arie Kouandjio, whose last name isn't nearly as unpronounceable as it appears at first blush (Kew-and-jee-oh, right?). Laken Tomlinson and Brandon Linder are the two interior prospects targeted in this class, and Ohio State hasn't separated itself from the pack for either.

Defensive Tackle: Right now, it's all Johnathon Hankins, the short, stubby Michigan DT who is also entertaining offers from Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and... Toledo? This kid must be something special if Oklahoma is going all the way up there for him, and the Sooners are known for their beastly defensive tackles - Tommy Harris, Gerald McCoy, so on and so forth. So, Ohio State has some competition for him. It's likely that he'd sooner (no pun intended) get significant playing time at Oklahoma, given that Gerald McCoy is probably leaving for the draft after a solid year and the other number-one on the depth chart is senior Cordero Moore. Nevertheless, I wouldn't rule out some good freshman minutes as part of the tackle rotation at Ohio State if I were him.

Defensive End: Jamel Turner, Darryl Baldwin and J.T. Moore are in the fold, but offers are still out to Fre'Shad Hunter and Alani Fua, another DE/OLB hybrid. Ohio State has also shown interest in Tobi Okeyemi, but no offer has been forthcoming. I wouldn't hold your breath for another commit here.

Linebacker: Jeff Luc, one of the other guys in this class being recruited by anyone who's anyone in the college football world, is the number one target at ILB, though he can apparently play outside just as well. Since Scott McVey is already committed, ILB isn't a position of major need. So when Luc chooses some SEC school or USC over the Buckeyes, it's no reason to fret. On the outside, Khairi Fortt and Jordan Hicks are the staff's primary targets, and the only OLBs with Buckeye offers according to Rivals. Given Ohio State's depth at the position as things stand now, I wouldn't worry if either heads elsewhere.

Cornerback:  Lamarcus Joyner has been high on the Buckeyes since forever, but it's apparently coming down to Florida State and Ohio State, which like, come on. Shouldn't this be obvious, Lamarcus? I don't mean to sound too arrogant, but you've got one program in turmoil and agony and the other which, in my mind, just needs a little tweaking. If Joyner ends up a 'Nole, Ohio State has a bevy of back-up plans, with offers out to four other cornerbacks. Terrence Mitchell too may also end up a 'Nole, but nothing tells me to write him off yet. Christian Bryant's a Glenville kid with offers from SEC schools and Iowa. Tony Grimes is yet another Florida kid with an impressive offer list that belies his three-star rating, and Joshua Shaw is a Cali kid coming in for the USC game (who also boasts a Trojan offer). Even with three cornerbacks coming in the '09 class, it's clear the staff is still looking for some depth as stalwart back-ups like Devon Torrence and Donnie Evege get up there in the eligiblity years.

Safety: As of now, the only offer is out to Chad Hagan, who hasn't been evaluated by either major recruiting service. He is listed as an RB by Scout and a safety by Rivals. His offer list is fairly good for a guy about which seemingly little is known; Michigan, Illinois, and the Buckeyes are the biggest names after him.

Athletes: OSU has offered Nickell Robley and Jarred Haggins, with Robley probably going elsewhere and Haggins able to play a number of positions; hence the term "athlete". Haggins' size screams corner to me, but I think he'll be hard to get out of the south.

Kicker/punter: The afore-linked Drew Basil picked us over Kentucky, Cincy, and Purdue, and locks up this sector of the recruiting class for the foreseeable future.

A couple things to keep in mind: Hyde's academic troubles means the staff will have to reserve a scholly for the 2010 class for him if he ever wants to be a Buckeye. Nevertheless, I expect this to be a bit smaller than the previous two years', if only due to scholarship limitations. This class is going to end up being about quality over quantity; as you can see, players that fit into Jim Tressel's schemes are slowly falling into place, especially the DE/OLB hybrid- type-guys who should, if all goes well, be terrorizing Big Ten quarterbacks for years to come. I don't see this class ending up with a skill position haul of similar talent to the last two classes, but that's to be expected. Near as I can tell, this class is all about the future of the lines and the secondary.

I love recruiting...

it makes me want to give people hugs. Seantrel Henderson- he wants to play both basketball and football. What do you think about that? Has Thad Matta expressed an interest for Seantrel bein’ on his team?

Yep

Ohio State is one of the schools pursuing him to potentially play both.

That this show was cancelled and family guy is still airing new episodes

is one of the greatest travesties of justice of the last twenty five years. Prove me wrong.
