Adventures in Creepiness: Recruiting Update One

In case you missed me hyperventilating on the quarterback recruiting woes last week, I'll sum it up for you by saying this: behind Terrelle Pryor is a) a former baseball player, b) a guy whose best offer outside of OSU was Kansas, and C) a walk-on. With the commitment of Taylor Graham, a 3-star prospect to Scout and unrated by Rivals, Ohio State is afforded a bit more depth at the position, which really is all I should be asking for. Nevertheless, I'm a little wary of the coaching staff putting all its eggs into the Braxton Miller basket, because no matter how certain some things may seem, recruiting can be a crap-shoot. Now, I'm fully confident Jim Tressel knows exactly what's up and he won't disappoint. Still, color me cautious until Miller signs on the dotted line.
That being said though, Graham is a welcome addition to the '10 class, which currently features Andrew Norwell, Jamel Turner (who appears to be having academic issues, unfortunately), J.T. Moore, David Durham, and Scott McVey. For those of you keeping track, that's one offensive lineman, one quarterback, two defensive ends, and two linebackers. Tressel signed 25 players in the '09 class and 20 in the '08, so this is looking to be a (slightly) down year in terms of class size. The staff saw a lack of genuine depth at a critical position, and fixed the problem.
Here's a rundown of how the recruiting wars are being waged as things stand right now. This is done with apologies to MGoBrian, who did this format first, with a far snazzier presentation.
Quarterback: Essentially sewn up with the addition of Graham. Andrew Hendrix is the name to watch here, but all indications are Charlie and the Field Goal Factory will land him following the Graham commitment. (EDIT: that was fast)
Running back: With three freshmen hitting campus this summer and a talented duo of upperclassmen already toting the rock, this is hardly a position of need. Still, Ohio State has offered Roderick Smith, Spencer Ware (uh... that profile pic might mean something), and Corey Brown (not that Corey Brown). Smith, a 6'2" 215 pound bruiser is especially high on the Buckeyes.
Fullback: Not a position of need, and no offers to speak of.
Wide Receiver: Again, a three-strong receiver class in 2008 makes this a lesser position of need, but Ohio State still has offers out to Christian Green and James Lewis, two Florida boys who are also entertaining offers from various SEC schools, including the mighty Gators.
Tight End: Ohio State has two redshirt freshmen and a true freshman at this position, but has still thrown out an offer to the massive CJ Fiedorowicz, who mostly wants to stay in the Illinois area; rumors are he has a top three of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa, in no particular order that I'm aware of
Offensive line: Norwell being already committed is a very good thing. Nevertheless, Seantrel Henderson would not hurt. Matt James, a Cincy kid and Chris Farley doppleganger, as well as Laken Tomlinson, an Illinois prospect, are being actively pursued by the staff. Interestingly, all four are considered tackle prospects, and Ohio State has yet to offer a guard. Chances are good anyone who commits will be shuffled around a bit before settling into one position. One center, Brandon Linder, another Florida product, has been offered, but appears to be a long-shot to get out of the state.
Defensive tackle: Johnathan Hankins and Garrison Smith have both been offered. Hankins is the 6'3" 326 pound wide body the line badly needs; Smith is more of the slimmer, pass-rushing type of DT that Heacock has grown fond of. I won't complain if we land Smith; dude's got offers from SC, Florida, LSU, and basically everyone else of note.
Defensive end: At a position its already loaded at, Ohio State already has two commits in Jamel Turner and J.T. Moore, and rumor has it even David Durham may be getting in on the fun as a potential Leo guy (for the uninitiated, a Leo is a hybrid DE/OLB pass rushing nightmare, a position which Vernon Gholston absolutely murdilated fools)
Linebacker: I guess the beauty of the whole thing is that Durham and Turner also technically count as linebacker commits if they don't work out at end; nonetheless, Ohio State is targeting both Jordan Hicks (a decided Texas lean) and the wonderfully named Alani Fua, a lanky 6-5 California linebacker who sports offers from Pac-10 also-rans (Oregon State, Arizona State, etc.) and BYU. Ohio State is probably set on the inside with Scott McVey's commitment.
Safety: Things are kinda shaky here. Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell are graduating next year. Behind them, they will leave converted linebacker Jermale Hines, Nate Oliver, and Jamie Wood as the heirs apparent. Zach Domicone and Rocco Pentello were both afterthoughts in their respective classes, so I'm not sold on either of them yet. Yeah, that sounds like depth, I guess, but Ohio State has missed out on both of the guys offered so far in the 2010 class: Marvin Robinson is headed up north and Luke Muncie will be on the bayou in 2010. Latwan Anderson will probably be getting an offer soon, but it may be a little late in the process for him. Isaiah Lewis and Earnest Thomas have both been hearing things from the Ohio State coaching staff, but no offers have been forthcoming. I'm willing to wait and see what happens here. Perhaps there is depth where I just don't see it in Pentello and Domicone.
Kicker/punter: No one needed, no one offered.
There is a ton of time left in this process, so I wouldn't fret over the relatively small class. Tressel has been on a roll lately in racking up top-5 classes, and while this one may only be top-10, there are no truly critical positions of need left in this class. This class will be about providing depth more than filling glaring holes (that's what.... she said?). Expect the next recruiting update sometime next month.

S Ware
That’s Spencer Ware’s baseball team’s hat, not Michigan’s. He plays for Midland. Supposedly UNC and LSU lead.
Ha!
I saw Michigan listed among his favorites and just assumed. Thanks for clearing it up.

What about the secondary?
You covered the safeties, but what about the corners? I REALLY like this kid Lamarcus Joyner, from Florida. Any update on him? I know he’s visiting the bucks on Sept 12th for the USC game.
He’s only 5 foot 8, but from what I gather, he is an absolute FREAK. Do you think he’d end up playing corner if he chose the bucks, or would we use his speed at receiver?
I get excited thinking about C.J. Barnett on one side of the D, with Joyner on the other.
Cornerback isn't a position replete with major needs, so I pushed it to the back of my mind.
Still, Joyner would (will?) be a sweet addition to this class. Grabbing one of the best Sunshine State players out from under the nose of the Big One and mediocre Two means something.

there’s also some interest in nigel terrell (from alabama) at safety; don’t think he has an offer yet, but his measurables are pretty impressive.
I'll try to remember to add him to the list next time
6-2, 215, supposedly runs a 4.4… I wouldn’t mind. Unfortunately, his best offer is either Auburn or Florida State. Let’s see how the next month goes.
