Post-UNC Thoughts

Well, at least it was fun to watch. My thoughts:

  • Turner being selfish with the ball will result directly in at least another 5-6 losses. With 10 minutes left in the 2nd half, dude had an assist goose egg. That isn't going to win many games.
  • Being turnover-prone doesn't help either, and Turner was definitely that tonight. It's UNC, so I don't foresee a return to the high-risk, high-reward, all-or-nothing 2007 edition of ET, but it's far from the most auspicious of starts, and it doesn't portend good things for when Ohio State faces good teams down the road.
  • Ohio State paid for its lack of bigs tonight. The moment Lauderdale got in trouble, Madsen simply couldn't keep up. I didn't expect him too, I guess, but it just helps to reaffirm the fact that this team will struggle mightily against good inside teams.
  • William Buford had a horrifying night. The shot selection on the whole was subpar, but Buford did his best Jamar Butler impersonation in trying to toss up the most difficult shots possible. Diebler, on the other hand, started hella cold, did some good things in the second half, and then did some more bad things. Dude's a junior; some consistency would be nice.
  • ARGH ARGH STOP MAKING RIDICULOUS JUMP SHOTS ON FAST BREAKS TAKE THE BALL TO THE DAMN HOOP AND THROW THAT FUCKER DOWN GAH DON'T MAKE IT SO COMPLICATED
  • Defensively, we were fine, I think. Still a few lapses on the perimeter, but I think a lot of it had to do with typically excellent ball movement on the part of UNC.
  • I'm encouraged by the end, of course. Making it a two-point game after being down ten with just a couple minutes left shows some promising resiliency. Still, I would rather have had to not make a comeback in the first place.
  • California won't be quite the test UNC was, and we'll learn a bit more about who this team actually is tomorrow night. Come on, were you really expecting a win tonight anyway?

I wouldn’t say expecting a win, but I think it was a game that could’ve been won.

Two things I want in the next game:

  • Cut way way down on the turnovers
  • Buford rides the pine

I was absolutely disgusted with his play last night. I felt offended. I can only imagine what coach Matta had to say at halftime when he threw up that rediculous shot with about 12-15 seconds left, WHEN HE SHOULD’VE WAITED FOR THE LAST SHOT!

The comeback was inspiring but they’re not going anywhere if they have to rely on coming back every night. Easily a game they could’ve won, and I’m disappointed the rally fell short, but they were just undersized and outshot.

Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!

Shooting

Had the Buckeyes shot better throughout the game, you would be reporting a completely different result. I was happy they made a game of it despite foul trouble and the atrocious shooting night.
