Minnesota Gameday Thread

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Ohio St. Buckeyes, Oct 24, 2009 12:00 PM EDT

This hellacious week of handwringing can finally come to a merciful end. It's now time to see if Terrelle really is learning from his mistakes, or if this is just a decided "sophomore slump" that will cost Ohio State a few more games down the line. Ohio State's defense should be good enough to preserve the win today, and next week as well. Ideally, it will keep things safe enough for Terrelle to learn how to be Terrelle again without the pressure of being forced to win the game for his team. That'll have to happen in due time, and chances are his performance against Minnesota, good or bad, will have no bearing on that scenario. Hopefully, our golden boy will make a few plays today to keep us believing that that will happen sooner rather than later.

Minnesota's DL did not have a bad game against us last year

And it’s looking like it’ll be the same story this year.

Our defense and special teams has to carry us in each and every game. If they break, we lose.

The spread formation doesn’t do Saine any favors.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

How so?

www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I see him as more effective with the running start from plays under center. And the power runs.

It could be that I just hate the spread option play.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, we should be running Woddy Hayes ball… 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

by Simmsinns on Oct 24, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if we need to go the other extreme, but the pro set makes a lot more sense to me with a big o-line and good RBs. Still can mix it up.

Perfect example there of Pryor’s wussieness. I like the decision to run, but why not make a cut and run up field for a big play, instead of running out of bounds.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

i don’t think he’s run out of bounds ever since you mentioned that lol

i think pryor will improve and develop. he’s just going through a rough time in his career now. look at jimmy clausen: he’s a heisman candidate and sucked his freshman/most of sophomore year. i still like pryor, and the people who are calling for bauserman are ridiculous. however, i see him being a pat white-type of player in the nfl.

Well, that was an... interesting.... first half.

Seems like the offense is more misfiring than anything else today, rather than out-and-out failing to achieve anything resembling consistency. I know how this sounds, but we’re inches away from 28-0 and next-to-no complaining from the peanut gallery. Two dropped TD passes, and a third that was just thrown behind the receiver and picked off. We’re sustaining drives, Pryor is hitting open men, he’s running when nothing else is available, and Saine looked good before the injury (concussion?).

YEAH!!!!! great throw by pryor.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

terrelle pryor, you have redeemed yourself. congratulations.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

It's Minnesota.

But at least we now know he can be competent against subpar defenses.

www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

but last week was purdue. he could’ve easily played like crap against minnesota too.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

True- he was pretty open again

by Big Red Dog on Oct 24, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

he still got his man deep downfield. it wasn’t under or overthrown.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

which is my point. it may be minnesota, but pryor played poorly against a not much better purdue defense.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

if that interception stands, that is a crazy one.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

zac robinson’s 18-22 with 3 TDs. that guy is awesome.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

If we weren't excited about 28 points, I think we'd be a bit more concerned about the rush defense

Minnesota’s rushing attack is awful and it’s getting its yards today. I’m going to chalk it up to the front four having its first subpar game of the year against an opposing rushing attack.

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

i wouldn’t be too worried about it.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh, that too.

www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

INT!!!! woot, woot!

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

or maybe “tressel pulling an urban meyer”

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

nice effort on that run. who is that?

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Jermil Martin, redshirt freshman, converted FB.

Much faster than I thought he was.

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!! :)

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Uh, why was Martin ever getting a look at FB?

Looks like Beanie Jr.

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

I was just thinking that.

What a difference between the two halves

by Big Red Dog on Oct 24, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

JERMIL MARTIN!

I’d say Berry’s redshirt is safe

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Certainly.

maybe this loss to purdue was a type of blessing in disguise. maybe wake up call’s a better word for it. wouldn’t want the offense to still be playing like it was vs. purdue against teams like psu and iowa.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

INT!!!!! coleman’s awesome.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

good for tressel to put in bauserman.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

I hope Coleman stays.

by Simmsinns on Oct 24, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

Wiki needs to fix that then damn it.

I thought he was then, decided I better check just to avoid looking stupid. I failed.

by Simmsinns on Oct 24, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

browns could draft him. they need CB help.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a safety, unless you are advocating the mooncamping corner.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought he was a safety, but he’s listed as a cornerback on the roster on this site. i’m confused…

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He's a safety.

In the pros, he might be able to play both. Browns need anything they can get in the secondary.

www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

ok, that’s what i thought. and yeah you’re right about the browns!

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, he’s listed as a CB on yahoo too. Don’t know why.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Stay where? He’s a senior and a probable late 1st, early 2nd round pick.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

he thought he was a junior.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Bauserman in. Recap time.

Good talk today, lady and gents. Enjoyable thread for an enjoyable second half. I’m out.

good job, pettrey.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 2:57 PM EDT reply actions

let’s not give up a late score for minnesota. come on, shut out!!!!

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. oh well, can’t complain about a 38-3 (or 7) win.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

38-7, can’t complain haha. a lot of the 2nd string’s in.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

“you know what team’s not hot? oklahoma?”

oh i wonder why…

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

good, uconn’s winning

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, ROY Small…. wow.

by Simmsinns on Oct 24, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Again?

www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I was mocking the announcing during the first game. They called him Roy.

by Simmsinns on Oct 24, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s comforting to know we’ve got quite the group of future RBs. And hell, Jamal Berry is still redshirted.

by Simmsinns on Oct 24, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Martin could be earning some PT

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

tebow better not win the heisman again. that 2 time heisman winner belongs to osu and osu only ;)

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

agreed.

I’m rooting for Ingram for that reason. Honestly, Tony Pike has been the most impressive candidate I’ve seen. Anyone see how many games he is supposed to miss?

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

ingram, clausen, pike… i don’t care who it is as long as it’s not tebow! he hasn’t been that great this season. he’s just a candidate because it’s tebow. those other 3 have done much more than tebow.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

How bout Freddy Barnes. Another 14 catches, 172 yards and a TD today.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

name sounds familiar. where’s he from?

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

BGSU. Look up his numbers, absolutely incredible. Had a 22 catch 200+ yd game a couple weeks ago.

If BG had a better record, he’d be a top 3 candidate.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Barnes was the focus of the BG offense when we played them in 2006

Didn’t have a bad game himself, IIRC, even though his team did.

www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com

by Sam @ WWAHT on Oct 24, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Tebow didn’t miss a game, right? Griese’s just an idiot?

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

i would rather see clausen win than tebow, and i don’t like ND at all.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

although i did root for them vs USC

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

nice, solid win. good talking to you guys!

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

I wondered about that Juan Pablo montoya comment. Glad he appologized

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

wait, what happened? i must have missed that.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Spielman said, “where is Juan Pablo Montoya at in the chase standings”
Griese: “He’s out having a taco.”

I’m not sure if it was a bad joke or if he just didn’t know who Montoya was.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 24, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

no, WVU’s winning

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

but uccon’s driving

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

ah, interception. i feel bad for uconn.

by emily522 on Oct 24, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn it.

I was rooting for the Huskies.

so sad. that coach is a class act, though.
