Big Ten Power Poll Week 6

1. Iowa

2. Ohio State

3. Penn State

4. Wisconsin

5. Michigan

6. Minnesota

7. Michigan State

8. Northwestern

9. Purdue

10. Indiana

11. Illinois

  • We're finally starting to get some separation between the haves and the have-nots in the Big Ten; there are 2-3 teams that will probably be nationally-relevant at the end of season, another 4 or 5 who will hope they've at least got a foundation for the future, and at least two who'll probably be in the market for a new coach.
  • It's looking more and more like the battle for the Big Ten crown will come down to the battle in Columbus on November 14th. Each team vying for the championship has major obstacles to overcome to even hope of beating its foes; Ohio State's offense is all over the place in all the wrong ways, Penn State needs to get its offense working against serious competition, and Iowa, statistically, just isn't the defensive juggernaut it looked to be in Penn State. It will be very interesting to see how these next few games go for each team.
  • Wisconsin might actually be the league's most complete team, just not its most consistent. Ohio State's offensive struggles were not just due to Pryor's myriad problems; Wisconsin did a good job of limiting Ohio State's running backs and getting pressure on Pryor. I think they proved that they're "for real", as the pundits like to say, but they'll prove whether or not they have any actual staying power when they take on the Hawkeyes in Madison this weekend.
  • I know it might not seem like it, but Michigan's rush defense is getting better, and that makes me just a tiny bit more nervous about the match-up in Ann Arbor. Do you think Terrelle will be able to consistently exploit weaknesses in their secondary? Comforting statistic in the wake of their holding Iowa to 83 yards rushing: the Hawkeyes aren't all that impressive of a running team at 8th in the Big Ten. Still, anything and everything will make me antsy when it comes to Michigan improving.
  • Minnesota and Michigan State can still salvage their seasons, but a lot of things have to break their way; both have yet to play at least two of this poll's top three. Minnesota seems more likely to make a bowl game, despite having to play all three.
  • Purdue, Indiana and Illinois are all terrible and if anyone outside that circle of horror loses to them from here on out actually manages to lose to them, they shall be forever shamed.

iowa v. osu

You might have spoken to this before and I just missed it but what’s your take on why you have Iowa ahead of OSU in your B10 power poll but OSU ahead of Iowa in the Blogpoll? I assume Iowa is getting their due props for beating conference foe PSU and maybe OSU’s win over Wisky wasn’t as big? Just wondering.

that has to be it...

in which case i can’t argue with Sam there…

Essentially, yes

Restricting it entirely to the conference, Iowa’s resume is simply more impressive than the Buckeyes’. How the Hawkeyes fare against the Badgers this weekend may change all of that.

As you can see below, I have Iowa just a smidge ahead of us, but after next week (provided they both win of course) Iowa will have a larger advantage with a win vs Wisconsin and us playing Purdue (although we play them on the road, which negates some of the negative points).

My current Big10 rankings (using the same formula from my BlogPoll comment):

1. Iowa 6-0, 5.47
2. Ohio State 5-1, 5.46
3. Wisconsin 5-1, 4.51
4. Michigan 4-2, 4.18
5. Minnesota 4-2,3.62
6. Penn St 5-1, 3.53
7. Mich St 3-3, 2.80
8. Indiana 3-3, 2.27
9. Northwestern 4-2, 1.89
10. Purdue 1-5, 1.75
11. Illinois 1-4, 1.07

These rankings reflect the paucity of opponents Penn St and Northwestern have scheduled. But as they keep winning, it will move them steadily up the ladder.
