Wisconsin GameDay Thread
Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio St. Buckeyes, Oct 10, 2009 3:30 PM EDT
It's time for the tOSU's first big conference test. It comes against a squad that, without fail, plays the Buckeyes close, and one that has consistently matched Ohio State's physicality for the better part of two decades now. The Badgers are 5-0, but to call them impeccable would be a stretch; they've yet to beat an FBS opponent by more than 8 points after all, and that's against a relatively lackluster OOC slate. For the Buckeyes, it's another opportunity to showcase a nasty run defense, but it's also an opportunity for the offense to continue working out various kinks. Wisconsin's secondary is quite ripe, so hopefully, Ohio State can improve on its current standing of dead last in the conference in passing. If we're exceedingly lucky, we'll build an early edge and coast as Wisconsin attempts to pass its way out of the deficit. Leave your pre-game, mid-game and post-game thoughts here.
Go Bucks.

If Wisconsin's line is as good as advertised
They’ll be downright scary next year. No seniors.
Also, how are they all able to be so damn big and remain so athletic? That’s just unfair.

Have we begun a game with something other than an incomplete pass this year?

You have to be kidding me
you have to cut that back!

Nothing drives me more nuts
than when a receiver doesn’t know where he is on the field.

We need to crush these guys
the team has been on a mission since they lost to USC. We need to try to crush everyone the rest of the way.

Probably a block in the back, but that was an excellent play by Small.

I can't believe
Arkansas beat Auburn. 44-23…wow.

Saine moves piles
That’s why he’s better than Herron. For now, at least.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Wisconsin starting offense: "multiple"
Ohio State starting offense: “pro set”
Color me confused.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Thank goodness for this defensive line, really.
I’m not sure the offense deserves them.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
It really sucks watching Pryor struggle
because he clearly feels terrible with each mistake. You have to wonder about his mental state sometimes.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
The defense is going to give up yards merely because they're on the field so much.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Thad Gibson literally took a guy out of his pursuit angle with two massive paws
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
That's what happens when you go for the big tackle rather than the form tackle.
Good play by Tolzien.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
I thought Gilreath would give us trouble, just not in the rushing game.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Anyone else finding themselves praying that Wisconsin doesn't call the end-around again?
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
I just don't thinl Pryor is a QB
He makes way to many terrible throws.

It's becoming clearer and clearer than he just won't be Troy Smith
Which, to be fair, is a high standard. If we can even count on him for 200 yards through the air to go with roughly 50 rushing alongside some competent RBs, I think he’ll end up being serviceable.
But that’s like, a huge if.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
I don't fault you for thinking that way.
But that’s not a sustainable offense.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
And I don’t get any comparison to Troy Smith at all. Completely different players. Smith was a natural and smooth passer, who was undersized and quick and the last recruit to be signed- 3 stars as an athlete. Pryor was consensus number one recruit, great top end speed, tall and huge with an awkward throwing motion. The ONLY thing they have in common is that they are black QBs that went to OSU.
I agree
never boo your own team. That is such childish BS

If a few boos and after some really shitty play breaks this team’s spirit, we are in a lot more trouble than we think.
We love how our defense is playing and are pissed at our offense. They players should no this so they don’t become complacent.
How did the referees miss that blatant block in the back on the Wisconsin touchdown that sprung the ballcarrier around the corner?
Want out of Cleveland? Easy - mess with LeBron's entourage.
You know where we're probably most likely headed if Pryor doesn't improve?
Wherever the hell Va Tech has been since they hitched their hopes to Tyrod Taylor’s wagon. It worked out for them today, of course, but it defined the term “process”. Certainly won’t be beating the true greats if he doesn’t get worlds better.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Ahead how?
In the standings, yeah. As an offense? Definitely debatable.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
No, if Pryor doesn't get better, we're never going to be a good offense
but it won’t be an absolute disasters because we’ll have a ridiculous defense to rely on. It’ll be a disappointment, undoubtedly.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
This is BS
Their QB isn’t much better throwing than Pryor. Just keep guys in the box and watch the screen and we’ll be fine.
Be sure to check out the Arrowhead Pride weekly Power Rankings
On a side note, I'd like to give Spitler his props. He's playing far better than I thought he would.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
THey are playing us smart
Shut down the run, keep someone watching Pryor and force him to throw…which he can’t do.
Be sure to check out the Arrowhead Pride weekly Power Rankings
That's just not happening
Because a) we can’t recruit QBs for crap
and b) he’d be a WR.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Still not the greatest pass, but now we know why Posey is so luuuuuurved
This receiving corps is far, far better than it’s given credit for.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
What was wrong with the pass?
It was perfectly thrown. Over his right shoulder, away from the defender. All the receiver had to do was turn around and catch it.

If that pass is 5 inches to the left it is incomplete.

Yeah, after looking at it again, it wasn't that bad.
I thought Posey had to slow down a lot more than he really did.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
He did ust a little
but the fact that it was to his right side made it ok. The defender couldn’t reach it. If he tries to throw it ahead of the receiver he risks over throwing it or Posey not being able to see it.
I worry more about Pryor’s short throws than the long bombs. He seems way more confident throwing down field.

No prevent plz
They can get into field goal range quickly. Dumb move on the short kick call.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
So, that was... interesting
I thought it’d be close, but I thought it’d be because of Wisconsin playing out of their minds defensively, rather than Pryor stankin’ up the joint, even while given time and open men.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
It is hard of Ohio State to shot routes
because Pryor doesn’t throw them well but also because teas have so many guys up trying to stop the run. Having all those guys playing so close to the line runs the risk of them jumping a short route.
I think they need to work in the play action a little more to freeze up those defenders, then have Pryor get rid of the ball quick…but he has to be accurate.
Be sure to check out the Arrowhead Pride weekly Power Rankings
Can't help but notice it was mostly defensive players bouncing up and down
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
I'm actually a little surprised Clay has had so little success
I know, I know, the defensive line…
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Probably a block in the back on the return, but an AMAZING play by Hines
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Nope, Ross Homan. Unsportsmanlike.
Aaaaaaand my ABC visual feed cuts out. Still have sound.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Did any of the replays indicate what Homan actually DID to merit this penalty?

I think we might need to start rotating a little bit more heavily on defense.
These guys are playing lights out (minus that blown coverage), but they’ve gotta be getting tired.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Hopefully we can keep the ball on offense for a bit here and get them some rest. I know I’m probably dreaming..
Who thought we'd long for the return of ball-control, 3 yards a cloud of punt?
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Did we get a finger on that something?
It seemed a little low, and if we did, that kids got a bit of (OSU, not NFL) ’Nuge in him
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
What was that I said about Virginia Tech?
Beamerball: Special teams, defensive TDs, pray the offense doesn’t turn it over?
So much for that defensive rest, though.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Anderson!
Thanks to Tweedledee and Tweedledum from Wisconsin, the Badgers are taking the snap from the 5.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
They're correcting the clock mismanagement from the returns and the field goal.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
I just realized I’m about ten minutes behind this game. OSU scored on a kickoff return, didn’t they?
Yes.
But your feed is probably about as stable as ours, which dropped out for an extended period after the Hines INT return.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Both he AND Spitler are doing wonderfully.
Spitler in particular is playing well above his talent level.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
What patented SamGrade would you hand out for this game thus far? 28 points in less than three quarters seems high-octane enough, but a mere 7 have been produced by the offense. Emboldened by the less heralded aspects of the game or befuddled by offensive ineffectiveness?
Well, I think the defense and special teams are just ridiculous, and any success
that Wisconsin is having is mostly due to tiredness.
But the offense, up until that last drive, was atrocious, and if we try that crap against Iowa, Penn State or Micghian, we won’t win any of those games.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
I was going to say Fresno State, but hey now, they’re not so bad. Maybe Indiana, barely. GET ON THE 1-11 TRAIN TO ZOOKVILLE
Might be the biggest disparity between talent and actual wins I've ever seen.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Thanks for being a chill bro homeslice whilst I momentarily invaded your website, Sam. Back to these goddamn papers. Have a good fourth quarter.
I know that Forcier seems to get away with it regularly
But with Pryor, it just looked like the ball fell out of his hands. Hence the ticky-tack.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
By rule, even if your outside the tackles, it has to pass the line of scrimmage.
If your inside the tackle box, than you need to have a WR in proximity.
Apparently not.

Sometimes, but the official who made the call thinks he wasn’t going to throw it until AFTER he was hit, then decided to throw it away and failed to get it past the LOS. I thought it was more of a fumble.
I’m with Sam, very ticky-tacky.
It was the way that the play went down that felt, I dunno, "wrong"
The ball just fell out of his hands. There was an ever-so-slight flick of the wrist, but I think that was more of a reaction to getting dragged down and wanting to protect the football. Perhaps I’m wrong, but it just felt like a misapplication.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
More horrifying: Rita Rod or the fact that we seem to be playing prevent with 7 minutes left ?
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Alright, no Tiller/Lynch "beautifying the score" TD
Thanks for the participation today, guys. You were excellent.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
Millen is pretty damn bad.
But he might be better at commentating than Jon Thoma was at punting after that first quarter. WOOF.
www.wewillalwayshavetempe.com
The best o-line? They’ve given up 6 sacks and had countless holds that were either called or not called.
Thanks for participating, guys. This live thread was excellent.
Good work all around. See ya next week. I’m off to campus to worship every inch of ground the front seven walks on.
